Makeup Obsession – Halloween Take It to the Grave Palette – Review
Take It To The Grave Halloween Palette £6 – Revolution
Halloween is well and truly over, I know, but it’s never too late to review a good looking eyeshadow palette! It took a while for me to buy this particular palette, having looked at it several times in Boots before finally impulse buying it on a stand by the till. Not a great thing when you’re on a makeup no buy, but at £6 it seemed pretty reasonable.
Firstly, I really need to talk about the packaging. Unlike most Obsession palettes that come in a cardboard case, this is housed in a black and clear plastic case. As someone trying to cut down on their plastic waste, this really put me off the palette. At least with cardboard there are some parts that you can recycle.
Inside:
The palette is a beautiful mixture of mostly warm toned, autumnal, Halloween shades. Containing 5 Matte and 5 Shimmer shades. They are each 1 gram in weight making the palette 10 grams all together. It’s overall pretty lovely, with a colour story I don’t have elsewhere in my collection.
Cruelty Free Credentials:
All brands from Revolution, including Makeup Obsession, are Cruelty Free. Not Leaping Bunny accredited, they carry the PETA logo.
Happily, I can also confirm this product is Vegan.
Testing:
I’m gonna start by saying that this is most definitely not my best attempt at an eye look, nor is it my best photography (I’m working on that). But I will talk you through what I did so you can see the colours used.
I started by packing the shade “Graveyard” into the crease with a pencil brush. Using a fluffy brush, I blended out the edges with the shade “Pushing Daisies” taking it up to the brow bone. I’m really disappointed with this shade and the way it blended out into virtually nothing. The picture above shows it after four attempts at building the colour and with using Revolution Cut Crease Canvas.
I deepened the crease with “Undead”, which was probably a mistake as it made the whole eye look far too shimmer – great shadow though. I finished the look with the shade “Tombstone”, creating a short of Halo eye. Using this on top of a fresh layer of primer didn’t achieve the best results. It went kind of patchy but did work better applied with a finger.
I used a small amount of “Cemetery” on my inner corner and added it to the very centre of my eye for a pop.
In the end it all just looked patchy and way too shimmery. I much prefer the pumpkin look I did at the bottom of the page.
Swatches:
The lighting on these swatches is not the best (I’m working on it!), but they are a good representation of the colours in real life.
The shimmers in this palette really deliver and are absolutely just as good as any I have ever tried from Revolution. The matte shades are definitely not rubbish and most do have pigment, it just takes a bit more work and blending.
Best Revolution Matte shades? The Revolution Pro New Neutral Palette.
The white shade “Ghosting” is the most chalky in the palette, and not really a shade I will use. “Undead” is my favourite in this Halloween palette and shifts from a brown/grey colour, to a lovely blue/green.
Also should point out that this palette doesn’t feature pressed glitter – a welcome change from most of the eyeshadows released in the past few months.
Verdict:
I thought I would like this palette a lot more than I did. It’s pigmented enough and there are some pretty good looks to be made if you have the patience. The shimmers are most definitely better than the mattes – the shades “Pushing Daisies” and “Ghosting” are a little bit rubbish.
The green and gold shades reminded me of the I Heart Revolution Tasty Avocado Palette, and if you like that but can’t buy it because you’re Vegan – this could be the exact palette you’re looking for!
Would I buy this palette again? No. Although it’s a great price at £6, it’s just not spectacular enough with a few shades that seem like complete duds. I’m not writing off Obsession shadows completely, but I hope the next palette I get is better. Happy “not” Halloween!
